Peles Castle

Located in Sinaia (44 km from Brasov), Peles Castle is considered by many one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe. It was the final resting place for several Romanian monarchs including King Carol I, who died here in 1914.

The building of the castle began in 1873 under the direct order of the Viennese architect Wilhem Doderer and was continued in 1876 by his assistant, Johann Schultz de Lemberg. During 1877-1879 because of the war they abandoned work. That's why the castle was inaugurated only on October 7, 1883. The location for the castle was chosen by the German prince Carol I de Hohenzollern, who was to become a king and it draws its name from the neighboring brooks which passes through the courtyard.

Several other buildings, annexed to the castle, were built simultaneously: The Guard's Chambers, The Economat Building, The Foisor Hunting House, The Royal Stables, and the Electrical Power Plant. The Sipot Villa was constructed later. This would serve as the work site of architect Karel Liman. Liman would later supervise the building of Pelisor (1889-1903, the future residence of King Ferdinand and Queen Mary of Romania). as well as of the King's Ferdinand Vila in the Royal Sheepfold Meadow

The castle was built in wood, stone, bricks and marble and comprises more than 160 rooms. The representative style used is German Renaissance, but one can easily discover elements belonging to the Italian Renaissance, Gothic, German Baroque and French Rococo style.

Peles is surrounded by seven terraces decorated with statues (sculptured by the Italian, Romanelli), stone-made-wells, ornamental vases and Carara marble. The architects used an abundance of wooden decoration, both for the exterior and for the interior of the castle, which confers a very special quality to the building.

Quite outstanding are the Big Armory Room, the small Armory Room, the Florentine Room, the Reception Room (where paintings and wooden sculptures depicting 16 castles of the Hohenzollerns are exhibited), the Moresque Room, The French Room, the Turkish Room, the Council Room, the Concert Room as well as the Imperial Suite.

Other exquisite attractions such as the statues, the ceramics, the gold and silver plates, the Meissen and Sevres porcelain, the Murano crystal chandeliers, German stained-glass windows, walls covered with Cordoba leather, ebony and ivory sculptures, as well as the extensive weapon collections are worth mentioning. It is also important to know that Peles Castle shelters one of the most important and most valuable painting collections in Europe, almost 2.000 pieces.

Almost adjacent to Peles Castle is Pelisor ("Little Peles"). King Ferdinand, who succeeded Carol I, intended to use Peles Castle as a summer residence. Supposedly he found Peles too big and overwhelming, so he commissioned the smaller, art-nouveau style, Pelisor Castle. Pelisor's 70 rooms feature a unique collection of turn-of-the century Viennese furniture and Tiffany and Lalique glassware.

Near Peles castle there is Foisor, a kings' residence with 42 rooms designed in the Swiss style.

Brancoveanu Monastery - Sambata de Sus

The "Brancoveanu" Monastery - Sambata de Sus - located on the valley of Sambata river- is famous for being a place of recovery, comfort and spiritual balm for visitors who halt or pray in this sacred dwelling. The history of Brâncoveanu Monastery started in the 17th century, when Preda Brâncoveanu erected on Sambata Valley the first church built in wood. On its place, around the year 1696, Constantin Brâncoveanu, the ruler of Wallachia (1688 - 1714), re-built a monastery in stone, in order to strengthen and save the Romanian Orthodoxy from the danger of Catholicism, which appeared when Transylvania was ruled by the Habsburgs (1683). In 1785 the monastery was partially demolished by the order of general Bukow from Vienna All the cells were completely destroyed, the church became a ruin and the monks were driven away. Throughout the 140 years since the destruction there had been many people who tried to restore it such as Metropolitan Bishop Andrei Saguna, Bishop Ilarie Puscariu, nun Maria Boros and so on, but with no results. The honor of becoming the second founder of the Brâncoveanu Monastery was given to Metropolitan Nicolae Balan, who started the restoration work in the 1926. Its consecration took place in 1946 , after the war (that is why the precincts were not rebuilt).

The architectural style fits entirely Brâncoveanu style, which emerged in Wallachia at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. Stones decorate the windows and the door frames, and the stone panels of the church add a special beauty to the monastery.

The steeple is octagonal outside and cylindrical inside. The interior is divided into: altar, nave, narthex and porch and it is quite common to the churches built during Brâncoveanu's time. The painting of the porch is entirely new and includes scenes from the Old Testament. The entrance from the porch to the narthex is through a thick oak door, framed by sculptured stone.

On the West-side of the narthex, where the Holy Virgin is painted, one can see the painting of Brâncoveanu's founders. The monastery houses five bells cast in Vienna, very well harmonized, electrically rung nowadays and weighing more than 2,000 Kgs.

The precincts which have been rebuilt are quadrilateral, also in a Brâncoveanu style. Three stone-carved towers adorn the precincts both on the inside and on the outside. On the ground floor of the Northern buildings there are the abbey and the cells for the monks. On the first floor there is a steeple and a new monumental and spacious church. The ground floor of the Southern buildings comprises a large refectory, the kitchens and the cells and on the first floor there is a large library.

The new monastery houses a museum, which exhibits one of the ancient glass painting collections belonging to the 18th-19th century (mostly painted in a naive manner) and very rare and historical valuable documents. Besides the glass-made-icons, one can admire ancient letters, the first edition of some newspapers, clothes worn by monks, ecclesiastical objects, a huge library and so on.

Poiana Brasov Resort

Of the over 40 ski locations in Romania, the most attractive are those in the Prahova Valley and Poiana Brasov. Besides being the most accessible, about 140-180 km from capital city Bucharest, they are equipped with snow cannons and flood lighting and accommodation facilities for all tastes and pockets.

Just 12km away from Brasov city, in a glade surrounded by coniferous forests, at the foot of the Postavaru Massif, you will find Romania's most famous skiing resort, Poiana Brasov. It is referred to in ski directories all over the world, often compared to other major resorts like Chamonix, Zakopane or Cortina D'Ampezzo in terms of natural setting. The snow layer lasts for about 120 days a year. It features great hotels and restaurants, very modern winter sports facilities, 9 ski slopes. It is preferred by some tourists because it is relatively inexpensive compared to ski resorts in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and other European states.

Sinaia Resort

Located in a beautiful mountainous region, at the foothills of the Bucegi Mountains , about 120km from Bucharest and 44km from Brasov, in the Prahova Valley, Sinaia is one of the oldest and most famous mountain resorts, often referred to as "The Pearl of the Carpathians". Located at an altitude of 767 m and 860 m, Sinaia boasts ski slopes at an altitude of 2,000 m, on the plateau of the Bucegi mountains.
History

Sinaia takes its name from the 17th-century monastery built here by a Romanian nobleman after undertaking a pilgrimage to Mount Sinai, Egypt.

Sinaia was first mentioned in documents, as a mountain resort, in 1869, when the locals saw the construction of the town’s first hotel. The beautiful region drew the attention of the Hohenzollern Royal House (Carol I - King of Romania) who built Peles Castle, starting 1873. It became the summer royal residence. Prior to World War II and the abdication of the royal family, Sinaia was a summer retreat for Romania's aristocracy. A walk up the mountainside reveals many grand summer homes from this period.
